According to the Ananda Organization, “Yoga means union. Etymologically, it is connected to the English word, yoke. Yoga means union with God, or, union of the little, ego-self with the divine Self, the infinite Spirit.

Most people in the West, and also many in India, confuse yoga with Hatha Yoga, the system of bodily postures. But yoga is primarily a spiritual discipline. Not that there’s anything wrong with practicing Hatha Yoga. The body is a part of our human nature, and must be kept fit so it doesn’t obstruct our spiritual efforts. However, those who are focused on self-realization do not necessarily have to practice it as much or at all. Yoga is an art as well as a science. It is a science, because it offers practical methods for controlling body and mind, thereby making deep meditation possible. And it is an art, for unless it is practiced intuitively and sensitively it will yield only superficial results.”

Yoga and meditation can be practiced in isolation, or one can opt for meditative yoga. In meditative yoga, meditation is combined with yoga routines – in it controlled breathing is used in all the yoga poses.

Even if practiced in isolation both yoga and meditation have their benefits – both psychological and physiological. Here are a few to start with:

Benefits of Meditation & Meditation Asanas

The popularity of meditation is increasing by the minute. Meditation refers to a habitual process where you train your mind to focus on the here and now. Often we find ourselves running on a treadmill to nowhere; meditating can provide us with a sense of much needed direction. So what benefits can meditation bring to your life? Here are a few answers!

  1. Reduces Stress
When one is physically and mentally stressed, the body releases the stress hormone, cortisol. High levels of this hormone can disrupt sleep, promote depression and anxiety, increase blood pressure and contribute to fatigue and cloudy thinking. Mindful meditation has been proven to take these symptoms by the neck and make them less intense.
  2. Controls Anxiety When you are less stressed, you tend to be less anxious as well. Meditation is also known to reduce symptoms of anxiety disorders, phobias, social anxiety and paranoid thoughts.
  3. Promotes Emotional Health We often find ourselves obsessing over the past or fantasizing about the future. Both are out of our control. What we have is the present but more often than not we tend to relinquish our control over it and start running behind what’s gone and what’s to come. When meditation brings you to the present, it teaches you an important lesson – this is all you have and this is all that matters. Such a view can lead to increased self efficacy and a positive look on oneself.
  4. Enhances Self Awareness Meditation encourages you to turn inwards and see what’s going on. It teaches you to recognise thoughts that may be destructive and encourages you to channel them into more constructive ones.
  5. Lengthens Attention Span Meditation is like a weight lifting exercise for the attention span; the more you lift, the more strengthened and enduring your attention becomes. Meditation is commonly practiced in the form of Yoga in the Indian subcontinent. The practice has now become global. In Yoga, there are 5 asanas (or meditation poses):
  6. Sukhasana – Comfortable Pose (cross-legged): This pose is recommended for those who find themselves unable to sit for long periods of time.
  7. Siddhasana – Pose of the Adept: This pose quietens the mind, has a balancing effect on the Nadis (nerves) and activates the spiritual energy of the Chakras.
  8. Vajrasana – Sitting on the Heels: The pose calms and harmonises body and mind. Vajrasana stimulates digestion and therefore it is recommended to sit in this pose for about 5-10 minutes after a meal.
  9. Ardha Padmasana – Half-Lotus: This posture is recommended for those unable to sit comfortably in Padmasana.
  10. Padmasana – Lotus: Particular Mudras are used with the breathing and concentration exercises and also for meditation. We are living in the 21st century, where the world is full of chaos, with issues and multiple problems surrounding us constantly. Whether noticed or not, our mind and body’s well-being goes through a lot of challenges as the clock ticks each day. And if these challenges are not addressed, it can lead to severe diseases in the future. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to take thorough care of our mental and physical health, using meditation.

Releases Stress When one is physically and mentally stressed, our body releases the stress hormone, cortisol. High levels of cortisol can disrupt sleep, promote depression and anxiety, increase blood pressure and
contribute to fatigue and cloudy thinking. Mindful meditation has been proven to reduce these symptoms and attend to one’s anxiety, as a result. Curtails Anxious Thoughts When you are less stressed, you tend to be less anxious as well. Meditation is also known to reduce symptoms of anxiety disorders, phobias, social anxiety and paranoid thoughts.

Enhances Self Awareness When the world around you is busy running outwards, meditation encourages you to turn inwards and see what’s actually going on. It teaches you to recognise thoughts that may be destructive and encourages you to create something more constructive out of them. Increased Attention Span In a world where our attention runs in deficit, meditation is like a weight lifting exercise for the attention span; the more you lift, the more strengthened and enduring your attention becomes. There are multiple kinds of meditations available out there. Here are a few! Twin Heart Meditation is based on the belief that an individual’s heart consists of two sections: the heart chakra or the emotional heart and the crown chakra or the spiritual heart. The meditation focuses on striking or enhancing the connection between these two sections. It slowly encourages

the opening of the gateway between the heart and the crown chakra, after the establishment of which surplus energy is produced in the form of pure white divine light, referred to as Prana. Eventually, this light works its way through the rest of the body, including the brain, to promote the overall well-being of a person by improving the physical, mental and emotional health. However, this meditation is not advisable in certain cases especially for people less than 16 years old, people with severe heart ailments, glaucoma, kidney and liver problems, pregnant women, smokers, heavy meat eaters, especially ones who consume pork, alcoholics and hallucinogenic drugs users. The experience one gains from the meditation may differ from one practitioner to another; in case of any discomfort one must stop the meditation. In case the condition worsens, it is
best to consult a physician. Tai Chi originated as a form of Martial Art in ancient China. Today, it has become popular as a dynamic intelligent exercise for the mind and body. Although, to be able to practice Tai Chi, one
needs to cultivate an abundance of knowledge and skills, these are actually easy to learn and show results almost immediately. For many across the globe, Tai Chi has gone beyond an exercise, to become a way of life. The ultimate aim of Tai Chi is to encourage the smooth and powerful flow of qi or life energy within us. This helps build a harmony between body and mind, resulting in both better physical and
mental health. Or overall wellbeing. According to the Ananda Organization, “Yoga means union. Etymologically, it is connected to the English word, yoke. Yoga means union with God, or, union of the little, ego-self with the divine Self, the infinite Spirit.

Amit’s Transformation from meditation coaching

One day, our coach received a call from the head of sales of a leading IT firm in Noida. He had called with a peculiar problem plaguing one of his top performers. He had a terrible fear of heights, which was impacting his growth within the firm.

When Amit, the star performer of the IT firm came to meet our coach for the first time he came across as a very confident young man. He was a smooth talker andhad stable behaviour, exhibiting no signs of any inhibitions plaguing him.

One winter afternoon, our meditation coach and Amitwere walking down the street after a lunch meet when a Dreamliner flew over them. While everyone, including our coach looked up to admire the gigantic aircraft, Amit’s eyes were averted. When asked, he confessed to hating airplanes. Whenever he had to travel, he would prefer travelling bytrain or by road.

Amit had an inherent fear of heights. His fear was so deeply entrenched that he could not travel alone in a lift/elevator. In office, he always preferred using stairway over lift. Even his house was located on the ground floor.

Our meditation coach returned to HappyHo’s office with Amit and took him to the office building’s terrace in Noida. Once there, he asked Amit to take a peek down the terrace. Amit began to sweat profusely and was unable to gather the courage to complete the task.

Our coach understood that Amit’s fear of height was stunting his professional growth and calm life from Meditation. Having a bird’s eye view and growing within the noida organisation was akin to standing atop a tall tower for Amit.

In his next session, our Coach invited Amit’s wife to accompany him for meditation. When asked about their previous vacation, she revealed they had rarely gone on a vacation after marriage. On the couple of occasions when they had gone for a vacation via an airplane, Amit would hold onto his wife’s hand throughout the duration of the flight and worry incessantly about his safety.

Over the next couple of sessions, our coach started Meditation NLP interventions for Amit in Noida, including powerfulreframing process. Apart from these, Amit was also taught several tantra meditation techniques.

Combination of these meditation techniques, over a period of time made Amit accept height as a virtue, and not as a demon. He started becoming friendly with height.

After various interventions, our coach decided to see the impact of the training by taking Amitto the terrace once again. When asked to look down, Amit un-hesitantly stepped towards the parapet and looked over the skyline of the city. The sessions with our coach had empowered him to admire the beauty of height, instead of fearing it.

The head of sales of the IT firm in which Amit worked also called up our coach and shared the huge shift in his confidence and work style he had observed in Amit with the help of meditation.

Certain negative emotions impact your behaviour which can impact our professional and personal life… There’s no harm in seeking a coach’s help.

There’s nothing to lose, but so much to gain from consulting a meditation coach at HappyHo.
