Repressing desires is not healthy. Indulging in desires is like a moth flying into fire. If you are convinced of your higher goal in life of living in peace and harmony within and without then lead a mindful life. As you meditate your mind will be calmer, agitations will be less, your actions will be driven not by subconscious programming, but by awareness of your short term and long-term goals. Desires would not bind you but free you from the tyranny of unconsciousness.
