During this lockdown caused by Coronavirus Pandemic, many people who have to be forcibly in isolationship, have suddenly become more interested in meditation or mindfulness. And luckily, there are thousands of meditators in the world today to offer meditation to the new people. This gives the world a new hope for a better world and better humanity. If this happens, then this pandemic will prove to be a blessing in disguise. This isolation during the worldwide lockdown may feel like a punishment to the vast majority of people, but we can say it was existentially needed to teach humanity a lesson. For most people, certainly for those people who have been living a comfortable life of unconsciousness and insensitivity towards nature, animals, and fellow human beings, it is a bitter pill to swallow.
This bitter pill and the seemingly painful situation can open a new door for humanity. Now we have an opportunity to introspect and be meditative. This reminds me of a question sent by one friend recently: How has meditation changed your life that now you counsel people for living better lives and encompass with positivity?
Meditation, as I learned from Osho, is certainly a transformative force. Just being close to a person who is deep in meditation, transforms others who come close to him. This is what happened to me when I met Osho and started living in his ashram. The energy of an enlightened one is wonderful and graceful that you feel uplifted in his presence, and life becomes a juicy affair. It is the magic of Satsang, Osho describes it as silent heart to heart communion with the master. The master may not say a word for days, or months or years, but just by being in his energy field, it can transform the disciple. Osho himself has explained it: All the mystics all over the world have always felt impotent as far as communication is concerned. “Communion” is possible, but communication, no. This has to be understood from the very beginning. A communion is a totally different dimension: two hearts meet, it is a love affair. Communication is from head to head; communion is from heart to heart, communion is a feeling. Communication is knowledge: only words are given, only words are said, and only words are taken and understood.
Osho points out: Science can be communicated, religion cannot be communicated. It is a transmission beyond scriptures. It is saying that which can be said so it can be said only through silence. Even if words are used, they are used only to emphasise silence. They are used only to create a background for silence. Buddhas have spoken, and have spoken more than anybody else, but all their speaking functions only as a contrast for the silence that they want to deliver.
This lockdown can become a good opportunity to learn the art of silence. The meditation contains all that is mystical and magical–deep within our interiority. Osho teaches this silence in one of his discourses Osho, This Very Body the Buddha, Talk #5: Learn silence. And at least with your friends, with your lovers, with your family, with your fellow travelers here, sit in silence sometimes. Don´t go on gossiping, don´t go on talking. Stop talking, and not only on the outside – stop the inner talk. Be in an interval. Just sit, doing nothing, just being presences to each other. And soon you will start finding a new way to communicate. And that is the right way.
Start communicating through silence sometimes. Holding the hand of your friend, sit silently. Just looking at the moon, feel the moon, and both feel it silently. And see, a communion happens – not only communication, but a communion. Your hearts start beating in the same rhythm. You start feeling the same space. You start feeling the same joy. You start overlapping each other´s being. That is communion. You have said without saying anything, and there will be no misunderstanding.
