Building self confidence is based on control of our personal circumstances. We accept the things we cannot control, but we learn over time to control our thoughts and feelings and the impact we can have on the wider world. That is the things we have a degree of control over. Here are some reminders to help you build your own confidence.
Don’t be Impatient .
We are unlikely to switch from lacking confidence to being highly confident in a few days, all though sometimes this can happen. Instead, confidence is more likely to build incrementally over time. It can help to think about something you are good at now and work back over the stages you went through to get to the point at which you are today. Try this in reverse, Pick a point in the future where you are succeeding in something at which you currently lack confidence. What were the things that helped to build your confidence to the point at which you are succeeding? Try to work those confidence building measures and actions into your current life. A good example where this can work for us comes in something many people fear – making presentations. Even after a little training or coaching, it is unrealistic for most of us to expect to be the next Martin Luther King or Winston Churchill. Regular practice and feedback will help us reach a level of competence in the short term, And overtime we can work to improve.
Bounce Back
The path to being a more positive, confident person is not smooth. Set backs come along to test the most confident of people. Failing to pass your driving test, not getting that promotion, or loosing in a sporting contest are all typical experiences that can test our confidence levels. Confident people learn from these experiences and from mistakes that they may have made, but they don’t let them diminish their own self belief. A mistake free life means a life lived without trying anything new. The set back or the mistake is often much less important than the reaction to it. Understanding that there will be set backs and that we all experience them helps us to keep perspective and make sure that the set back does not unduly affect our confidence.
Inventor Sir Clive Sinclair, who popularised the pocket calculator, was once asked about all the failures he had as an inventor – some readers will recall the Sinclair C5 car! Sir Clive gave two responses. The first was that he could not have had the successes without the failures. Success is never granted, but not trying the cause of fear of failure guarantees no success. The second was that the successes made the failures worth while – the failures were and essential part of being successful.
